IFP is arranged within the National Research Council, which is the largest and most important Italian Research Institute.

The CNR's mission, set in its Statute is to carry out, disseminate and promote research activities in key areas of knowledge and study their application for scientific, technological and economic development in the country.

This is accomplished through a widespread organization across the country and structured in 7 Departments. IFP belongs to the Department of Engineering, ICT and Energy and Transport Technologies (DIITET), which includes CNR Institutes dealing with research topics in the fields of production and construction, ICT, energy and transport, nano-technologies and new materials, aerospace and applied mathematics. These topics include the development of advanced technologies in the fields of Information Technology and Cyber Security, the design of electronic and optoelectronic and photonic devices in the field of medical diagnostics, cultural heritage preservation and analysis and Monitoring of food, water, soil and forests as well as infrastructures.

The Department also includes institutes working in the field of nano-technologies and advanced materials for applications in medicine and environmental issues; the development of advanced solutions for the improvement of production systems ('factories of the future'); smart and sustainable mobility, traceability of production and distribution networks in the various product sectors.
