The International Symposium "Plasmas in the Laboratory
and in the Universe: new insights and new challenges" will be held at Villa
Olmo (Como) on the lake, about 50 km North of Milano. It will start on
Tuesday September 16th 2003, and end Friday
September 19th. This Symposium continues a tradition of International
Conferences in Plasma Physics and in Astrophysics held regularly either in
Varenna or in Como.
This particular Symposium aims at recognizing that:
There are new results and new problems on hot topics in plasma physics,
both in the Laboratory and in Astrophysics; There are two, often separate,
science communities behind these results; It would be important that the
two communities properly interact with each other on the progress made,
given the deep roots that they have in common.
The scientific program will focus on the following general research areas:
- BASIC PLASMA PROCESSES
- SPACE PLASMAS, PLANETARY PLASMAS, AND THE HELIOSPHERE
- SOLAR AND STELLAR PLASMAS
- PLASMAS AROUND COMPACT OBJECTS
- PLASMAS IN GALAXIES
- PLASMAS IN CLUSTERS OF GALAXIES
- COSMOLOGICAL PLASMAS
- TESTING PLASMA ASTROPHYSICS IN THE LABORATORY
The structure of the Symposium will be in the form of
eight half-day sessions, typically based on two long invited papers and
three shorter orals per session plus one poster session. The selection of
the contributed papers and the division into oral and poster presentations
will be made on the basis of a one-page abstract submitted by the
participants. The Proceedings will be published as a volume of the
American Institute of Physics Conference Series.
